Phone iOS 4 is now released and almost all of the users are talking about it which is enabled with loads of new features for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch, iPod Touch 2G and 3G models. we have already talked about the easy upgrade to iOS 4 manually or via iTunes 9.2 to enjoy this latest firmware. But in case you don’t find it more friendly or feature-rich and want to downgrade to the earlier version, i.e iPhone OS 3.1.3 firmware, you can follow the below mentioned steps.

Downgrading is little tricky part and In order to downgrade iOS 4 on your iDevice, you will need the ECID SHSH certificate for firmware 3.1.3, and here I will assume that you have kept it before the official release of firmware 4.0 .

How to Downgrade iOS 4.0 to 3.1.3 OS Firmware

  • if you are a Windows users you can navigate to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ ( assuming that you have installed OS in C: drive) >> double click on the “hosts” file and open in a notepad.
  • If you are a Mac user then you can head to the path “/etc/” and open the hosts file with TextEdit
  • At the end of the “Hosts” file simply add the string “74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com” (check out the below screenshot)
  • host

  • Now its almost done and just set up your device in recovery mode,

How to go to recovery mode?

  1. turn off and unplug your device from your computer
  2. press and hold the Home button while reconnecting the USB cable to your iPhone
  3. after iPhone is connected it should power on the device
  4. continue holding the Home button, and after a while you will see the iTunes logo appear and
  5. then finally a “Connect to iTunes” will be displayed
  6. release the Home button now
  7. Now you are in recovery mode
  • Now open iTunes and do a normal reset by holding down the SHIFT key (Windows) or Alt key (Mac) and clicking restore in iTunes >> now select the original 3.1.3 firmware and wait for the completion
  • You are done.

Now you have successfully downgraded your iDevice from iOS 4.0 to firmware 3.1.3. and can use the old version itself.
