There has been set a trial period in central London and till the end of 2011, people there will be able to use free wifi at high speed as Nokia just offers 26 hotspots for using the free wifi. If this is successful, in 2012, free wifi is to be available in and around London as Olympics is to be held. Currently these trial hotspots are concentrated near West End shopping areas,Victoria, Marylebone and Westminster. However the internet speed would be 20megabits per second with download speed 1 megabit per user at maximum so that it is available to many users. Currently, financial district, the Square Mile, already have access to free wi-fi by The Cloud Even, central london has free wifi through solitary access points in shops, hotels, pubs and bars. Those ISPS subscribers through brand wifi service can access the net. However, since wifi is not available in all areas uniformly, Greater London Authority encourages boroughs to set up free wi fi in busy street including london tube station. If this will be successfully adapted, in 2012, all people will have access to free wifi which is a very positive step towards easing the digital life in UK. This is even to be expanded to the poor telecom infrastructure consisting areas like india and africa.
Craig Hepburn, Nokia’s director of digital and social media says,
“The trial is going to help us understand what people are using it for so we can improve it in the future.”
So, lets see if this trial phase will be successful. Keep tuning in for more news.
