Elgato Facecam - Test de la webcam HD

The Elgato Facecam is a reference product in the streaming sphere.

We therefore decided to test this luxury tool in order to compare its interest with that of the webcams we have already used.

I recently spoke to you about the Elgato brand when I tested the HD60 X acquisition box. The brand has proven itself and its know-how is no longer in question. Even if they offer products with a budget in the upper end of the average range, they remain in a category accessible to all content creators.

Moreover, the brand's leitmotiv promises useful products for creating high-quality professional content.

The Elgato Facecam is on sale for 159.99 euros. At this price, it blows away the budget of a camera like the Streamplify CAM model that I presented to you a few months ago.

The Streamplify model costs less than 70 euros. It is therefore legitimate to wonder about the interest of spending such an amount for a webcam with the same characteristics, a priori.

Contents - Sober and efficient

As soon as you unpack it, you'll notice that the whole thing is very simple, but with quality. The box contains the instruction sheet, the camera in a small fabric bag and a USB-C to USB-A cable of approximately 2 metres.

The camera may be small, but it's still quite substantial with good measurements for a solid and compact object (79 x 48 x 58 mm for 96 grams). The plastic finish reflects excellent quality, and once again, it is a feeling of robustness that emerges at first contact with the object.

The USB-C connector is located on the back and a 360-degree rotating hinge allows for a comfortable tilt. The hardware is flexible and sturdy, so you can stabilise the Facecam on a universal stand above your screen. You can also use the clamp-like base to hang it directly on your screen.

Installation of FACECAM

Starting up the Facecam is quick and easy. Just connect the USB-C cable to your computer and the camera will be recognized automatically. You will then need to install the Elgato Camera Hub software from the Elgato website.

Once the installation is complete, you will see the software and your face, if you have removed the cover, of course. Depending on your needs and your lighting, all you have to do is set up your capture to achieve your goals. To use it, all you have to do is launch your capture program, such as Wondershare Filmora or OBS. In short, it's fast and efficient, as promised.

The image and video rendering of the Facecam

On the one hand, we have a "Prime Lens" by Elgato, which it certifies is "100% glass", with an 18-coat anti-reflection coating and an anti-infrared filter. On the other side, we have a "high-end" CMOS sensor designed by Sony and named Starvis.

The result is absolutely sharp and top-notch. Compared to the intermediate webcams I've used, the image is particularly sharp and pleasing. The comparison is even more striking in darker conditions. As I use it mainly in my gameroom, the result quickly convinced me.

The key question concerns the lack of 4K definition in 2022. It's worth asking, but given the budget, well under €200, quality 4K is simply not an option. Yet the Facecam manages to hold Full HD 1080P at 60 frames per second brilliantly, with no loss of stream, which is remarkable.

Here it is, stocky and reassuring! The hindquarters of the black lady.

Needless to say, options such as autofocus and other automatic settings available on more expensive cameras are absent. It all comes down to the same thing - budget. The Streamplify CAM had autofocus, and that was its biggest weakness. The circle is complete.

Conclusion - a webcam for whom?

The Facecam delivers on its promises. It is definitely one of the most expensive webcams in its class, but it is also the wisest. It makes do with a 1080p/60fps image, but it does so smoothly and masterfully. The object is not eccentric, but rather robust.

Finally, the Elgato Facecam manages to perform brilliantly in less than optimal light conditions. If you are looking for a FULL HD webcam and have a budget of around 170 euros, the Facecam is the camera for you.
