How much does it cost to build a gaming PC?

Exactly how much do you have to spend on a gamer PC to get a version that's worth it?

Well, that depends on whether you plan to use your new PC for anything other than browsing and gaming, and pretty much how nice you want those games to be.

Building, or buying, a new gaming PC is very similar to buying a car.

There are tons of options available from low end to super high end. This is where you have to make a choice. Do you want an incredibly fast but stripped down race car, or do you want the Rolls Royce with all the options and features possible? Or, do you just need something reliable to get from point A to point B?

How much does it cost to build a gaming PC

Computers are very similar in that you can almost get as much power as possible for around €1500-2000, or you can build an extremely sophisticated desktop PC with much less power for the same cost. Or, you could combine extremely fancy + extremely powerful and end up spending more like 4000-5000 €. Or, you could go the modest route with much less expensive builds.

That said, most people will be fine with spending €500-800 on an average gaming PC, but others may need to spend €1,000-€1,500+ to meet their expectations. It's all about what you need and the type of experience you're looking for.

One thing to bear in mind is that we are not considering the price of an operating system, monitor, keyboard, mouse or audio. If you don't have any of that (most people won't have a copy of Windows for example), expect to add at least €300-350 to the cost of your build.

That's about €100 for your operating system, another €150 for a decent monitor, another €50 for a keyboard/mouse, then another €50 for headphones or speakers. That's just the low end of peripherals. At the high end, you could easily spend anywhere from €500 to over €1,000 on a monitor, €100+ on a mouse, €100+ on a keyboard and €100+ on headphones.

Towards the end of the post, we'll talk more about how to effectively balance your budget to get the most out of what you use.

Drawing up a budget to buy a gamer pc

Some of us really only need a cheap gamer PC that can play sports titles like CS:GO flawlessly and also allow us to play play playable AAA games. A "budget" build is anything under £600 and usually includes an i3/R3 processor or equivalent, a 4-6GB graphics card and at least 8GB of DDR4 RAM.

These types of builds are great if you play a lot of indie games that aren't very hardware intensive, or if you're big into competitive shooters like CS:GO/Overwatch, or MOBAs like League of Legends. In fact, given the power and increased budgets, they are more than qualified to take on AAA games.

In general, a budget level build should be something you can grow into with future upgrades, things like your processor, graphics card and storage should all be upgradeable. A £500 machine will easily last a few years before needing an upgrade, but when the time comes, anything and everything can be upgraded.

Bear in mind that builds at this level are not completely suited to graphically intensive AAA games on ultra settings: they'll play them for sure, but you'll be playing on settings closer to the average settings in the latest versions.

The following is a benchmark for a dated version of my €500 budget. Everything was tested at 1080p on ultra settings for consistency and comparison with higher builds: it's likely you won't be using ultra settings in most of these games, so it's worth noting that lower settings will increase the frame rate considerably in many titles.

As you can see, in AAA titles like The Witcher 3 and GTA:V, this low-budget build isn't really up to the task of ultra settings, but in games like CS:GO and Overwatch, there's not a problem much beyond 60fps. Ultimately, anything above 60fps is going to result in smooth gameplay.

  • Mid-range builds: that's probably you

Most of us want a solid mid-range gaming PC, something capable of playing basically anything on high settings or better at 1080p 60fps. But what exactly does this mid-range build look like, how much will it cost, and what kind of performance will we get?

For starters, everyone will have a different definition of what 'mid-range' might look like, but as far as I'm concerned, mid-range is somewhere between £700 and £1000. That said, the best build will always be the one you customise for your own needs.

If you're looking for mid-range versions, you should have an AMD R5 or Intel i5 processor (no, you don't need an i7 or R7 in most cases), at least 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and a solid 6-8GB graphics card (RX 580/GTX 1660 Ti/RTX 2060. You will also need a good 400-550W power supply, motherboard, storage and of course a case.

High-end builds

If you're the kind of person who expects the best performance in every possible scenario, or if you want to overcharge your PC, then you're going to have to spend more to get more.

From around £1000 you can get top notch 1080p/1440p performance and have the ability to run literally any AAA game at 60fps or more, plus the ability to do some decent overclocking. Looking for even better performance or want to get into 4K gaming? Then a budget of €1200-1500 should get you a perfect setup with an i7/R7 and at least an RTX 2070 graphics card or better.

This €2000 4K-ready model is an excellent example of maximising price over performance in the upper end of the range. Not only does it use almost as much power as possible right now, but it also uses the highest quality hardware you can get. The only way to really get more power than that is to stretch your budget another £500 to buy an RTX 2080 Ti.

Most people really don't need a build like this, but it's still nice to be able to run absolutely everything you want the way you want it, without losing frames. Basically, if you're spending this much, it's probably because you like to play on the highest settings and can't stand anything less, right?

Budget management - Very important

  • Let's talk about budget management before we finish this article completely.
  • To do this, let's take the example of a person with a budget of €800 to spend on their PC.

With that €800, this hypothetical person has to buy everything they need, including a mouse, keyboard, monitor, sound, a copy of Windows and, of course, the tower.

On many websites you will find that builds are designed so that an €800 tower is an €800 build and it is an $800 build. But, that said, a "build" is only part of the equation, you still have to factor in the cost of peripherals (mouse, keyboard, etc) that you don't already have.

Back to our hypothetical person, let's call him Kevin. Kevin wants to build a PC capable of playing 1080p in AAA games; using his expert buying sense, Kevin realises that he also needs to consider the price of everything he needs for his build before blowing his entire budget on his tower alone. As Kevin needs everything, mouse, keyboard, monitor and some audio, he earns about €300 which he will have to put aside from his budget for these parts.

This leaves him with only €500 for his tower.

Since Kevin is smart, he was able to determine that not all of his €800 budget could be spent on his tower. Since he still wanted the same level of desktop PC as before, Kevin decided to wait and save the money he needed for his peripherals instead of compromising and buying a cheaper PC. In the end, Kevin ended up with a great gaming PC and some excellent peripherals to go with it.

On the other hand, we have Frederic. Frederick didn't take the time to read or think and spent his entire budget on his tower. Only then did he realise that he had no keyboard, no monitor, no mouse, no headphones. Now Frederic is frustrated because he is unable to use his new office until he has saved enough money (... again...) to buy the peripherals he needs. Not ideal.

Be Kevin, not Frederic (no offence to anyone called Frederic)

Conclusion

Now I hope I've been able to give you a rough idea of what you should spend on your gaming PC to get the gameplay experience you want. Don't forget to factor in the price of any additional peripherals you may need. Since choosing the right monitor is so crucial to getting a good experience, I've put together a specific guide on how to choose the best monitor for gaming.

You don't necessarily need to spend huge amounts of money to get good performance, and you can easily beat what a console offers for not much more than the average cost of a PS4 Pro. Stay away from those cheaper pre-built builds because they usually suck.

Choosing a gamer PC can be difficult because there are so many options to choose from. When trying to find the best gaming desktops, remember your budget and the type of games/software you want it for! We recommend that people have their own opinion when assessing which gamer computer is right for them but also try to see the best gamer pc's out there if that's too hard for you. With all these choices in mind, it will make things easier for those who need help finding the perfect computer today.
