Biggest announcements from Apple's -Far Out- event

iPhone 14, new Apple Watch, new AirPods Pro, iOS 16, Apple's "Far Out" event delivered its share of announcements.

Like every year in September, Apple held its back-to-school Keynote. The event dubbed "Far Out" lifted the veil on the new iPhone 14 lineup, three new connected watches and the next generation of AirPods Pro headphones. If you missed out on the event, here's what you needed to remember...

Biggest announcements from Apple's -Far Out- event

An iPhone 14 "Plus" instead of the Mini

The "standard" iPhone 14 doesn't bring any noticeable upgrades over the iPhone 13, as they both feature the A15 chip. Apple has, however, introduced a new iPhone 14 Plus model with a larger 6.7-inch screen and improved battery life. A "Mini" version is not in the lineup this year. Both standard iPhone 14s come with an upgraded 12MP main sensor, as well as a 12MP TrueDepth selfie camera with autofocus.

The iPhone 14 will be available from September 16 and the iPhone 14 Plus from October 7.

The iPhone 14 Pro range says goodbye to the notch

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max come with some interesting upgrades. The notch is replaced with a pill-shaped cutout that houses the camera and Face ID. Apple calls this design "Dynamic Island," as notifications will appear and move around this space.

In addition, the Pro lineup features a more powerful A16 chip, a brighter screen, better battery life and a 48 MP rear camera with a quad-pixel sensor.

Second-generation AirPods Pro

Apple has announced an upgrade to the AirPods Pro. They come with a new H2 chip for "spatial" sound and have twice the noise cancellation capabilities of previous models. In addition to increased listening time of 6 hours on a single charge (or 30 hours with the charging case), speakers are also installed on each earbud and the charging case so they can be found with Apple's "Locate" app.

Three new connected watches

The all-new Apple Watch Ultra offers a more rugged design for extreme sports enthusiasts. It features a larger titanium case designed to protect it from wear and tear, as well as a new customizable action button for switching between sports. The new Oceanic Plus app also gives users the ability to track their underwater dives. The Apple Watch Ultra offers up to 36 hours of battery life on a single charge, and a battery optimization feature coming later this year will give the watch an extended battery life of 60 hours.

Apple also introduced the new Watch Series 8, which packs new health features including two new temperature sensors, one on the back and one under the screen.

To complete the trio, Apple introduced the next-generation Apple Watch SE, with a new, faster S8 chip and some features borrowed from the Watch Series 8.

iOS 16 and watchOS 9

iOS 16 and watchOS 9 will arrive starting September 12. The iOS 16 update enables new features for the lock screen, including widgets and notifications that appear from the bottom of the screen, while watchOS 9 adds a set of new fitness tracking features.
